April 5 - While it is important to take out comprehensive car insurance to protect your car(s), it is equally important to read and understand the fine print of your car insurance policy to prevent circumstances that may stop your insurer from paying you out in the event of loss, damage or theft.
For instance, did you know that even if your car gets stolen that had a gear lock in place but was not approved by the Vehicle Security Association of South Africa (VESA), your car insurance company has the legal right to and will likely refuse to pay out your claim.
In the case of car security items such gear locks, alarms, immobilizers or satellite tracking devices, be sure to contact your insurance company and tell them exactly what devices are installed in your vehicle to ensure that all are VESA approved.
When you buy a new car from a dealership, they should tell you if the installed security measures are 'insurance friendly'. In fact, in many cases you will be given the paperwork for each item which you may be required to send through to your insurer to prove that they are VESA friendly.
The reason insurance companies will only pay out on vehicles protected by VESA-endorsed security and anti-theft measures is that there are unfortunately some security brands considered sub-standard and thus, easier to bypass or break.
Think of it this way, when mountain climbing - where your life can literally dangle from a piece rope - you would obviously buy the best quality rope endorsed by the various mountain climbing associations wouldn't you? Of course you would.
It is for this reason that you need to ask your insurance companies questions when you take out or upgrade your insurance policies, as well as read the fine print, so that you are well aware of any potential pitfalls or technicalities that can prevent you from claiming in time of need..
