It has to be said that the Internet must be in the top five 'inventions'
during the past 100 years because not only has it revolutionised access to
information on a global scale, but in some cases has actually 'reinvented' the
way in which business is conducted.
Take insurance, for example. In the 'good old days' before the Internet
came along, if you wanted to take out insurance you would have to call up an
insurance company and arrange for an 'insurance salesman' to come and see you.
(Insurance salesman falling somewhere between used-car salesmen and lawyers on
the scale of people to watch out for). The insurance salesman would then take up
tons of your time, usually trying to sell you a million and one insurance
solutions.
But in all fairness to the humble insurance salesmen, they were necessary if you
wanted to be comprehensively insured. However, back to the Internet. With the
ability of companies to now 'showcase' products and services online in what were
known as 'brochure' sites, soon followed the ability to put up 'ecommerce'
sites.
In other words, companies no had the ability to actually do business over the
Internet. Probably the best example of a pure ecommerce-powered business is
Amazon.com. However, many companies in various industries soon jumped on the
ecommerce bandwagon and in no time people could purchase all range of goods over
the Internet.
While many companies soon realized that their particular business was not suited
to the Internet, many realized how much further the Internet could propel their
businesses. One such business is
Dial Direct insurance, which launched in South Africa only a few years ago.
As one of the few South African insurance companies that has 'eliminated the
middleman' (apologies to the humble insurance salesman), Dial Direct soon became
one of the largest insurance companies in the country simply by going direct to
the public in two ways:
One, by toll-free telephone number to the well-motivated and highly-trained and
professional Dial Direct call centre and two, via the Dial Direct website
where, in just a couple of minutes, people could complete and submit a FREE
eQuote form online, and receive a response almost as quickly!
This online way of doing business has revolutionised the insurance industry and
many of Dial Direct's hundred's of thousands of client have received
comprehensive insurance policies quickly and efficiently, with just a couple of
mouse clicks and few fields to complete!
