How Being Uninsured can get You Sued

April 5 - Believe it or not, but over 60 per cent of South African drivers are uninsured. Or, too put it another way, less than 40 per cent of South African drivers are comprehensively insured.

This horrifying statistic means two things depending on whether you are insured or not. If you are insured and happen to drive a nice expensive car, then you had better make sure that if ever involved in an accident that you are involved in one with someone with insurance.

The reason is simple. With both drivers comprehensively insured, you can let your insurance companies handle the claims, panel beater, pay outs etc, no fuss, no foul.

If, however, you are involved in an accident with somebody who is not insured and your prized limited-edition Porsche is looking all the worse for wear, than prepare for the hassle and expense of suing the pants of the other guy (assuming the accident was his fault).

The flip side of the coin is if you are the 'unfortunate' individual who has helped destroy some guy's prize Porsche. Be prepared to enter a world of financial pain as he prepares to sue you in your personal capacity to recoup enough money to fix his beloved toy with perhaps something extra to ease his pain and suffering, loss of earnings etc.

You get the idea of how you could end up in financial debt for the rest of your life assuming you aren't bankrupted first. The point of this example is just how risky it is too drive around without car insurance.

More importantly, it is your responsibility to take out comprehensive insurance to cover yourself and someone else in the event of an accident. Many people in South Africa feel that drivers without insurance should not be allowed to drive on our roads.
