According to climatologists, the world's climate and weather patterns are
steadily changing which can and has had catastrophic results.
In South Africa for instance, the changing climatic patterns have meant that the
Eastern and Southern Cape regions are more likely to be hit by an increasing
number of storms and resulting floods.
In terms of insurance, this means that homeowners who live in these
flood-effected areas need to make sure that they are comprehensively insured in
the event that their homes and properties are damaged or destroyed during
floods.
A well-known South African insurance company recently released statistics
showing that this year alone damage caused by flooding in the Southern and
Eastern Cape has cost the local insurance industry over a hundred million rand
in claims.
However, bear in mind that as large as this figure sounds it was only applicable
to homeowners with insurance policies. The unfortunate reality is that many more
homeowners in the affected areas were uninsured, resulting in them being left
destitute and homeless.
This means that it should be a high priority for homeowners in these high-risk
flood areas to ensure that they have comprehensive household insurance policies
and that they are both current and accurate.
All too often people move and forget to inform their insurance company about
their change of address or the value of their new home, and this will obviously
impact negatively on their coverage.
