Whenever you embark on a long distance trip, you should always ensure that
your car or vehicle is in tip-top shape and that you are fully and
comprehensively insured in case you need to make a claim.
The following tips are designed to help minimize any potential problems you may
encounter when going on a long distance trip:
- Ensure that your car or vehicle is regularly serviced
- Check that your tyres have enough tread, are not 'bubbled' anywhere, are
at the right pressure depending on the load you are carrying and/or towing
and that your spare tyre is inflated and in good condition.
- Ensure that the jack and wheel brace are in your car and that they are
in good working order.
- Check that your car's fan belt is in good condition and that it is set
at the right tension.
- Check that your car headlights and indicators are in working and are not
dirty or damaged.
- Check that your front and rear wiper blades are not damaged and are in
good working order. Check that your windscreen wash tank is full.
- Check that the connections to your car battery are tight and corrosion
free. Have the battery checked at a service station.
- Check that your car oil and water levels are normal. It is always a good
idea to take a spare can or two of oil and a bottle of water just in case.
