Long Distance Driving Tips

Whenever you embark on a long distance trip, you should always ensure that your car or vehicle is in tip-top shape and that you are fully and comprehensively insured in case you need to make a claim.

The following tips are designed to help minimize any potential problems you may encounter when going on a long distance trip:

  1. Ensure that your car or vehicle is regularly serviced
  2. Check that your tyres have enough tread, are not 'bubbled' anywhere, are at the right pressure depending on the load you are carrying and/or towing and that your spare tyre is inflated and in good condition.
  3. Ensure that the jack and wheel brace are in your car and that they are in good working order.
  4. Check that your car's fan belt is in good condition and that it is set at the right tension.
  5. Check that your car headlights and indicators are in working and are not dirty or damaged.
  6. Check that your front and rear wiper blades are not damaged and are in good working order. Check that your windscreen wash tank is full.
  7. Check that the connections to your car battery are tight and corrosion free. Have the battery checked at a service station.
  8. Check that your car oil and water levels are normal. It is always a good idea to take a spare can or two of oil and a bottle of water just in case.
